1. Create a Vision Board

 

 

This part can be so fun: let yourself dream! What would your dream wedding florals look like? What kinds of colors, styles, and venues do you imagine yourself getting married in?

Investing this time to create a vision board will help make sure your wedding is exactly as you’d hoped. Remember, floral design is a visual art so your images can communicate more than 1000 words for your designer!

With awesome social media platforms that allow your imagination to run wild like Pinterest, Instagram, and picmonkey, you can easily share and create a board that reflects your love and personal style. You could also go the old-fashioned route and buy bridal magazines and make a poster board worthy of hanging and looking on for a happy reference to what you’re planning for!

Taking all of the ideas you have in your head and seeing them visually on a digital or physical board can also help you define your wedding style. Color palettes you’re drawn to, specific arrangements, and favorite flowers are all helpful to have in mind before meeting with your potential florist.

2. Be On The Same Page

 

This one might seem obvious, but it can be easily overlooked until it’s too late!

Your florist can help bring your ideas to life, but if there are multiple ideas and conflicting opinions, making everyone happy will be close to impossible.

Being on the same page with your future husband or wife will also help make sure your florist is clear on your expectations. Whoever you meet with will want to do their best to make your day as beautiful as it can be. Without a clear idea of what both of you want for your big day, it will make it harder to design flowers that align with your hopes.

It can even be helpful to make a list of things you don’t like so that your florist has an understanding of what to avoid. This can be just as helpful.

3. Prepare Must-Have Info For Your Florist

 

There are specific things you need to have checked off your wedding planning list before scheduling a floral consultation. Let’s get into what information should be done prior to your meeting with a florist:

• Your Wedding Date: without a timeline, your florist won’t know if they’re available, what flowers are in season, or when they should be prepared to start working on your special day. Then book your consultation early so you can make sure your ideal florist gets you on the books (we recommend 5-8 months out)!
• Your Dresses and Suits: This will be immensely helpful for your florist so they can design flowers that will compliment your gowns and suit choices. The flowers should compliment your wedding dress style, bridesmaid colors, and suit colors. Bonus points: If you know the color of the linens on your table or colors in a venue, even better!
• Must Haves and Must-Not-Haves: If there is a flower you absolutely must have to be happy on your wedding day, make sure your florist knows! We understand that there is a special meaning to some flowers and while it might cost more for flowers out of season, it is always good to know what are non-negotiables.

 

The same goes for flowers or grasses you absolutely don’t want. Maybe you’re allergic to a certain flower or grass? Perhaps you have a bad memory associated with a flower? Either way, knowing that well in advance will help your florist create your perfect bouquets and arrangements.

Have they worked at your venue or a venue of its kind before? (Beach weddings vs. chapels are very different). Are they skilled enough to accomplish your more lavish ideas? What is their primary style? What flowers are in season for your wedding date?

4. Understand the Investment and Your Budget

 

Have a clear idea of your budget. We know it can be difficult to determine what the ‘right’ amount of money to spend is when you haven’t looked into professional floral designs before. However, it is crucial to have an investment number in mind and determine if it’s flexible or not.

Your florist probably has a minimum investment for the value of their service (we do). Once that is met, knowing if they have flexibility on your budget or if they absolutely need to stay at a certain number is vital. We will always do our best to give you everything you want, but we want to respect your budget and keep it in mind from the start.

It can also be good to keep in mind that when your florist discusses a quote with you, it’s about so much more than flowers. Designing, planning, processing, delivery, and more are all put into consideration when offering a quote.

 

5. Be Open to Suggestions, and Have Fun!
